Signs of a Water Leak

On the face of it, it seems as though it should be fairly easy to identify a water leak in your home.

This is not always the case; however, as water leaks can occur and go undetected for prolonged periods of time, creating a scenario where untold damage can be done to the structure of your home.

In this post, we’ll look at some of the signs that may be indicative of a water leak, whether you’re on a metre or not.

Look Out for Large Bills and Usage

If you’re home is on a metre, you’ll receive quarterly bills detailing your usage. In the case where a higher than expected bill is posted through your letterbox, this may be caused by a leak on your supply pipe.

To explore this further, you should consider calling out a qualified and accredited engineer to your home, as they can inspect your supply pipe and diagnose the issue with the minimum of fuss.

You can also investigate the source of your leak independently, by making sure all of your appliances are switched off and reading the dials on the front of your water metre.

Check Your Ceilings and Walls for Wet Areas

If your property isn’t on a metre, there are other signs that your property may have a water leak.

One thing to look for is damp patches on your ceilings and walls, whilst noises coming from your pipework and heating system may also be indicative of a leak.

Similarly, low water pressure may also suggest that you have an internal leak from your supply pipe, so keep an eye out for this when showering or running taps in the home.

Look for Cracks in the Wall

Over time, even the smallest leaks can cause cracks in the foundation of your home, as water continues to pound away at the same spot underground and causes the property to shift slightly.

Worryingly, you’ll never feel or notice this shift in your home’s structure, but the presence of vertical or diagonal cracks in your walls is a clear sign that your foundation may be damaged.

In this instance, you’ll need to call out an accredited plumbing and heating engineer urgently, as the sooner this issue is diagnosed the better.
